ABOUT THE PROJECT
Gallery Kolektiv 313 hosted the exhibition Growing Up Modern by Coryn Kempster and Julia Jamrozik in 2022. The exhibition accompanied the authors’ book of the same name, published by Birkhäuser, which explores childhood experiences inside iconic modernist homes.
The exhibition took place in Unité d’Habitation, making the building itself - and its inhabitants - an integral part of the narrative presented in the book and exhibition.
CLIENT NEEDS
The exhibition required visual communication that would respectfully extend the research-based, architectural character of the project while responding to the specific cultural and spatial context of Marseille and the Unité d’Habitation.
The materials needed to connect the exhibition to its previous iteration at the Weissenhof Estate in Stuttgart, while remaining site-specific and sensitive to the building’s modernist legacy.
DESIGN VALUE
I created the exhibition poster and invitation by continuing the established visual language from the earlier exhibition at the Weissenhof Werkstatt (2021), ensuring conceptual and visual continuity across locations.
The design approach focused on restraint, clarity, and architectural sensitivity — allowing the content, research, and spatial context to remain central. The resulting materials act as a quiet extension of the exhibition itself, bridging modernist heritage, lived experience, and contemporary graphic expression.
CONTEXT
Growing Up Modern examines what it meant to grow up in avant-garde domestic environments and how these spaces shaped later relationships with architecture. Through interviews and contemporary photography, the project offers an intimate perspective on modernist icons, including works by Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe, Hans Scharoun, and J. J. P. Oud.
